THE RED BOXER

MAZUPO CARRYING THE VIRGIN OF CAYSASAY by J.A. Austria, pen-and-ink drawing on paper, completed November 2011.
“At first I thought that the Daoist pilgrimages to the Virgin Mary of Caysasay in Taal, Batangas is just a remote case of religious syncretism in the Philippines. It was only later that I was introduced to another Daoist shrine at Santa Ana, Manila where the Virgin Mary [under the title Nuestra Senora de los Desamparados] is venerated as the Fujianese sea-goddess Mazupo.
The Chinese Filipino community seems not to have any qualms in fusing the identity of Daoist heroine-deity and Catholicism’s most revered saint—as long as the Sacred Feminine in her watery realm is honored.”
