THE RED BOXER

KSITIGARBHA by J.A. Austria, pen-and-ink drawing on paper, completed December 2011. Fo Guang Shan Mabuhay Temple - Manila.
In Jungian parlance,  the blank paper or canvas becomes the venue for ‘active imagination’.  It enables me to articulate in symbolic form the unconscious dynamics or conflicts within my psyche…to confront  my own demons and shadows…to tap archetypal energies to enable me to move towards wholeness.
Through art I become a PSYCHONAUT like the bodhisattva Ksitigarbha, who willingly descends into the Buddhist equivalent of hell to give comfort to the suffering beings in that dark place. Is it possible the Ksitigarbha is also a metaphor that we [who are adventurous enough to take the inner journey] should be willing to descend the darkness of the unconscious and be compassionate to the forgotten, repressed archetypes within us?”
