SHAOLIN ICON by J.A. Austria, from the “Heroes with Haloes” series, an ensemble for the Visual Perspectives exhibit, De La Salle Museum - Manila [January to May 2012], color maker and tempera on paper [framed], completed September 2011.
“The Shaolin monk-warrior has fascinated me as an icon of an idealized martial artist. At the same time, it is also a powerful symbol of the alliance between the WARRIOR and the MAGICIAN energies in man. The Shaolin warrior [at least in the legends] can fight and fly! Brave and shrewd, courageous and a trickster.
Though the WARRIOR is the most dominant archetype or aspect of my self, it was repressed for a long time. Therefore in my art, in my dreams and even in my fantasies…the WARRIOR often took a shadowy, villain-like form. This is in sharp contrast with the MAGICIAN part of me which has always been the active one in my external life-.the one exposed to the sun—and affirmed by the outer world. But the game is over…time for me to incorporate the forget aspects of the inner self.
“One of the major tasks of the inner journey therefore is the acceptance, embrace and integration of this shadowy part of me. This WARRIOR is an intrinsic part of my personality. If I want to be a whole person, then I must befriend it as a true part of me.
