THE RED BOXER by J.A. Austria, from the “Heroes with Haloes” series, an ensemble for the Visual Perspectives exhibit, De La Salle Museum - Manila [January to May 2012], color maker and tempera on paper [framed], completed September 2011.
“Depression after all is associated with repressed aggression , physical energies and anger. When one opens Pandora’s box of the psyche…one can imagine the WARRIOR energy exploding like a volcano.
I personally experienced this: entering into some sort of a “red stage”… a warrior-possession that made me think it’s but cool to ground-and-pound some people to a pulp. I have outgrown that stage and has accepted that the warrior is here to stay. My task now is to channel this archetype’s energies into more productive and life-affirming use.
After encountering this part of me….being called “nice” ceased to be a complement. Robert Bly made it clear that once the Iron John within comes to consciousness…life will never be the same again. Mytho-poetically speaking the Red Boxer is to me, what Enkidu is to Gilgamesh. The wild man has risen…thanks be to God.”
