BAKUNAWA SA BALON by J.A. Austria, pen-and-ink on paper, completed February 2012.
“The bakunawa is an ancient Philippine mythological creature, a giant serpent with wings who occasionally rises from the depths of the sea to devour the sun—a metaphor for the solar eclipse. In this pen-and-ink, I deviated from the usual portrayal of the bakunawa as an evil creature, and transformed it into a reptilian symbol for the shadow contents of the unconscious [represented by the well]. To some extent it is a practice in Jungian active-imagination: I offer my friendship to the bakunawa of my own psyche because I know it can be befriended…and I can even ride it to fly to a higher state of wholeness.”
